In an AI world:  The Imperative of Data Access and Ownership

“Today’s AI is worst AI you’ll ever see”.  In the next 3-5 years, AI will become exponentially more powerful, making the development and integration of AI applications and models far easier, thanks in part to AI-enabled programming. To prepare for this future, businesses must adopt strategies that ensure the availability of historical and temporal data.

Traditionally, managing software supplier risk meant scrutinizing software suppliers about their t security posture, including resiliency and continuity.

From a business perspective, there’s an additional risk—and opportunity—that demands attention: Data access and ownership.

In the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), business executives must ensure their software suppliers provide direct access and ownership of all business data. This includes not just top-level data but all underlying metadata. Ideally, this access should be facilitated via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), but at the very least, there should be provisions for data import/export.

Why is this crucial? Because data is the “oil” of the AI-driven future. Your software suppliers are either already integrating AI into their products or will do so soon. When they do, they’ll charge you for these AI features and may restrict your ability to transition to new suppliers. When they control your data, they control your business.

To maximize the value of AI, you will seek to integrate data from multiple software applications and potentially develop their own AI models. Full access to all your data is essential for optimizing the performance of these models, whether they are licensed via SaaS, custom-built, or both.

We are moving towards a world where AI is pervasive—across applications, people, and levels, throughout the company. Every application will also serve as a data source for integration and increased intelligence. Ensuring comprehensive data access and ownership today is vital for leveraging the full potential of AI in the future.
